Talcum powder contains talc, a clay mineral that is used in cosmetics to keep surfaces dry and to prevent sticking.

On May 12, 2016, an epidemiologist at the University of Virginia released a study showing that regular use of talcum powder placed African American women at an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer. An estimated 20,000 American women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and about 14,500 die from it annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
