Xarelto is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) used to prevent clotting in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (a-fib) and to dissolve blood clots in patients with pulmonary embolisms and deep vein thrombosis (DVTs). Xarelto can increase the risk of bleeding causing serious or fatal bleeding including stomach bleeds, rectal bleeds, brain hemorrhages, and strokes.
On June 6, 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning letter citing that Xarelto ads were minimizing the risks associated with Xarelto. The current FDA-approved label for Xarelto warns against the risk of serious and fatal bleeding.
